The origin of Vietnamese breadsticks
Breadsticks (also known as bread sticks) are a type of French bread originating from France (but originally originating in the Turin region of Italy), it was first launched at a bakery in Lanzo Torinese (Northeastern Italy) in 1679. In addition, breadsticks are also a very popular dish in Spain and are also very popular in the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Australia.
Ingredients and preparation to make breadsticks
Step 1: Prepare Ingredient
- All-purpose flour: 500 grams
- Warm water: 300ml
- Yeast: 10 grams
- Salt: 1.5 teaspoons
- Sugar: 1 teaspoon
- Unsalted butter: 30 grams
Step 2: Activate the yeast
Add yeast to 100ml of warm water (about 40 degrees Celsius), add 1 teaspoon of sugar, stir well, and let stand for about 15 minutes for yeast to bloom.
Step 3: Mix the flour
- Put flour, salt, sugar, and activated yeast in a large bowl, and mix well until the ingredients are combined.
- Add unsalted butter to the flour mixture, and knead well until the dough is smooth and not sticky.
- Proof the dough: Cover the bowl and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour until it doubles in size
Step 4: Shape the surface
- After the dough has risen, take it out of the bowl and divide it into small portions, each about 50g.
- Round each piece of dough, then roll it into a stick about 20-25cm long.
Step 5: Bake
- Line a baking tray with parchment paper and arrange the breadsticks on the tray, about 2 cm apart.
- Bake the breadsticks in a preheated oven at 180 degrees Celsius for about 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
Step 6: Finish
Cooked breadsticks are evenly golden in color and crispy. Then you can eat the stick baguettes right away or eat them with whatever fillings you like.
Notes to make the best Vietnamese breadsticks
- To keep the bread crispy for a long time, you can bake it at a higher temperature (about 200 degrees Celsius) for a shorter time (about 15-20 minutes).
- If you want your breadsticks to have a beautiful golden color, you can brush a layer of egg yolk on the surface of the bread before baking.
- You can add other ingredients to the baguette dough such as fresh milk, cheese,… to create a new flavor.
